Chapter 21

Claire now

When I get back to the house, more journalists are gathered on the pavement. They move towards me as one as I climb out of the car. Like a gang of vultures, flocking towards their prey.

‘Mrs Wallace, just a few words …’

‘Mrs Wallace, how do you feel about … ?’

I ignore them and walk up the path as quickly as I can, hoping that the same thing isn’t happening at Guy’s place. That they’ll at least have enough respect to leave my ex-husband and my grandson alone. I glance over my shoulder at the street, wondering if I’ll see the same red Citroën I saw at the hospital, if it really was a reporter trying to get some information on Dan’s condition. Thank goodness Drew’s brother has a police officer to protect him. I wouldn’t put it past these members of the press to pretend they were innocent hospital visitors. The patrol car drives by once again. At least I know someone is nearby if the press intrusion intensifies.

Despite what’s going on, despite my own personal involvement in the situation, I can’t let my team down. I have to try and carry on as normal. Even if Drew Allison and the journalists outside are attempting to ensure that I don’t.

I move from room to room and draw the curtains. Outside, the snow is beginning to fall thicker and faster and it’s getting dark. The journalists pull up their hoods as I cover the front window. With any luck, the cold will drive them away before too long, especially when they realise I have no intention of speaking to them. As I head into the kitchen and flick on first the heating and then the kettle, I think about Dan. I can’t help but feel guilty at how much he’s suffered. How broken he is. All because he chose to intervene. To try and help my daughter, my family.

He confronted his brother, the very night Sarah disappeared.

Furious at the way Drew had been treating his wife, Dan had called that afternoon and asked if the two men could meet up later. With Sarah at Keeley’s wedding and Guy and I looking after Dylan, the two of them had decided to take a late-night stroll to
